People amaze me! I am constantly in awe of how much pain we can hold in our hearts and bodies and still show up to take care of all the things we need to in our lives. This poem was inspired by someone I admire. This person has had a difficult life. They have buried their pain. At this stage in their life, they are not looking to do heavy duty excavating of the past. There is too much pain there. The little joys matter now. They soothe the old wounds when they flare up.
It’s called Wild Places
In the land of scorn,
I am the unwelcome one.
Seeking an open door, a crack;
A smile.
In the wilderness that is loneliness,
I am the wind.
Terrified, playful, bashful;
Hoping you will glance my way.
In between the four corners of fear,
I am the darkness.
Shadows casting sinewy shapes;
On a mind adorned by fright.
In traces of a smile, I am laughter
Yearning for welcome lips.
To glorify this moment;
Of infinite hope.
